Fall Harvest Party and Open House Held October 27, 2007
Thanks to All Who Attended and to the Ladies Auxiliary for making this event a big success.. |
The
Seneca Fire Protection District and the Seneca Fire District Ladies
Auxiliary hosted a open house / fall harvest party at the Racine Station
1. The Ladies Auxiliary provided chili and desert to all that attended.
Area
residence began to arrive at the fire station at 4:00 PM to enjoy the
afternoon festivities. Children of all ages dressed in costumes enjoyed
several games in which the Ladies Auxiliary offered. Local business
donated candy and prizes which were given to the winners of the games.
Around 4:30 the crowd went outside to see to watch as fire fighters
demonstrated Stop-Drop-And Roll. Fire fighters explained that if you
were on fire the worst thing you can do is run. By running the fire
spreads. The best thing you can do is STOP-DROP-AND ROLL. Once the
technique was shown the fire fighters brought out a red blanket to
represent fire.
The
blanket was place on a bystanders back and they immediately
stop-dropped-and rolled the fire out.
Also the children got a first hand experience of what a fire fighter
looks and sounds like when he or she is in full protective clothing and
has a self contained breathing apparatus strapped to his back.
This allowed
the
children see and hear the fire fighter so they would not be scared of
them in an emergency situation. Common response of the children was they
sound wired.
Fire fighters went on to explain several aspects of fire fighting
equipment including the fire gear that they wear. The children were told
about the self contained breathing apparatus (Scott Pack), Fire fighters
explain
the
tank had air in it. It is used by fire fighters so they can go into a
burning house to put the fire out. This lead into talking about how
smoke and heat goes to the ceiling and works it's way down to the floor.
Therefore if your house is on fire you need to crawl out of the house on
the floor because that is where the good air is. Several children and
fire fighters practiced crawling.
Once the demonstrations were over the children went back to playing
games until around 5:15 PM when the fire fighters demonstrated how they
extricate patients out of a wrecked car.
Around 5:30 PM the big red fire truck with lights flashing and a team of
fire fighters begin to extricate a patient in a car. As the fire
fighters began to work on the doors of the car with the Jaws of Life,
fire fighters explained the process.
The crowd watched as the front door was open and the patient was placed on a back board and removed from the car.
The
next part of the demonstration was removing the roof of the car. Fire
fighters cut the post between the doors, at the windshield and at the
back glass. Then the firefighter removed the roof of the car.
In all the the Open House was a big success with around 85 to 90 people attended.
The Seneca District Fire Department would like to thank all those
who attended and the Seneca District Ladies Auxiliary for all the hard
work they did to make this event so successful.
